Rerum Novarum
Habemus Papam. […] qui sibi nomen imposuit Leo XIV.
With his choice of name, Pope Leo XIV clearly places himself in the tradition of Pope Leo XIII (1878–1903). The latter was known as the workers‘ pope; his reign fell in the late 19th century – an era in which the so-called “labor question” and the mass misery of the “lumpenproletariat” in Europe reached their peak. Class struggle from the left and harsh reaction from the right. During this phase, Pope Leo XIII laid the foundation for modern Catholic social and economic teaching with his encyclical Rerum Novarum.
A comparison with the major ideologies of modernity (free or social market economy, communism, etc.) and the keyword distributism as a currently popular Catholic movement are exciting topics.
Is private property Catholic? What about the means of production? What am I actually allowed to do with my money?
A new social encyclical by Pope Leo XIV seems only a matter of time, and reading selected passages from Rerum Novarum and later social encyclicals together seems like a good idea.
As usual, the evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner together, followed by evening prayer and the theme evening itself.
As always, everyone is welcome, whether for dinner, the discussion or both.
So just drop by and get to know us. We look forward to seeing you!
