Theme Night - “The Nectar of the Gods, Dangerous Gateway Drugs, or Misunderstood Remedies - Psychedelics”

Ever since humans have existed, there is one thing they have enjoyed doing: seeking (and finding) intoxication. In a religious context, throughout the world, mind-expanding substances (so-called psychedelics) play a particularly significant role. At the beginning of the 20th century, potential therapeutic applications were explored. The (not entirely intentional) LSD bike ride through Zurich by Swiss chemist Alfred Hoffmann on April 19, 1943, is legendary. By the socially revolutionary 1960s at the latest, parts of the “counterculture” had discovered psychedelics for themselves—including from a religious perspective. The British author Aldous Huxley (known for his dystopia *Brave New World*) wrote *The Doors of Perception* and claimed that psychedelics bring one closer to God or the divine. Timothy Leary, an American psychologist, took a similar approach (he later wrote a book with the ambiguous title *High Priest*) and attempted to develop therapies for trauma and addiction. For this, he was first fired from his teaching position at the university (Harvard, incidentally) and later ended up in prison. By then, Richard Nixon’s U.S. administration (the one involved in the Watergate scandal) had firmly placed the “War on Drugs” on its agenda alongside the Vietnam War. Because the U.S. had this enshrined in international treaties, psychedelics were banned almost everywhere in the world.

But since the mid-2010s, things have started to change. The positive effects of psychedelics in treating severe depression, PTSD, addiction, and even dementia are simply too impressive to ignore. Following the legalization of cannabis, couldn’t these interesting substances also be made available again in some form?
