Theme evening: "Cheers! Germany and alcohol"
A glass of sparkling wine at a company party, a bottle of wine in the evening, a pint of beer in a marquee, a shot at the bar – alcohol is omnipresent in Germany. You can buy spirits anywhere and at any time. Who hasn’t bought supplies for a party crowd thirsting for beer and schnapps at a dodgy petrol station at midnight?
Cultivated intoxication – according to some. But alcohol is also dangerous if it leads to addiction, is consumed in traffic or lowers the inhibition threshold for violence.
Do we Germans take alcohol lightly? How much alcohol do we actually drink and when does it become a cause for concern? What are the social and economic consequences of our desire to drink, especially with regard to alcohol addiction? How do other countries deal with alcohol?
We look forward to hearing from the Psychiatry and Society working group at Leipzig University Hospital.
