Themed evening: “Marriage - holy sacrament, tax-saving model with side effects or patriarchal dinosaur?”
“Till death do you part” is the saying when marriage is entered into before God. However, if you consider the reality of life for many people in Germany, both Christian and non-Christian, then this sentence has not been true for many decades. In addition, there are many different concepts of marriage. According to the Catechism, only a man and a woman, ideally both Catholic, may enter into marriage of their own free will, with the willingness to be fruitful and to pass on their faith. And: a valid Catholic marriage is indissoluble.
German law is much more liberal in this respect, so a marriage can be divorced (section 1564ff. BGB) and since 2017, with the decision of the so-called “marriage for all”, same-sex couples can also marry (in a civil ceremony).
However, this relaxation has not reversed a trend: the number of marriages is declining. It almost seems as if people no longer want to get married.
And those who are still getting married? Do they do it for love? Or for (tax) legal reasons? What is this concept of “marriage” for us today? A patriarchal dinosaur to “chain the woman to the hearth”? An administrative act? An attractive tax-saving model? A sacrament?
Let’s talk about it. Our guest speaker on this topic will be Christian Bieber, marriage counselor at the life and family counseling service of Diakonie Leipzig.
